For those who haven’t seen the exact ballot language on Prop. 2, here it is below:
The proposal would amend the state constitution to provide that “the union of one man and one woman in marriage shall be the only agreement recognized as a marriage or similar union for any purpose.” [Emphasis mine]
If the proposal read exactly as above except without the similar union I would have no problem with it. As it is, however, is mandates permanent, constitutional discrimination against homosexual unions. I don’t want homosexual unions to be blessed by the Church as marriage, but I do want homosexuals to be able to raise children together, pass on estates to one another, and receive the same basic visitation rights as a married couple would. This is only fair, and those who think those basic rights are unfair are the ones who wrote this ballot language.
It seems likely now that Michigan will write this into our constitution. I think that not too far in the future we will all see this as a colossal mistake on par with denying women the right to vote. Constitutionalized discrimination based on bigotry has been fleeing from the march of liberty for the last century, but now, it seems, we are willing to turn back the clock. Next week, homosexuals will become second-class citizens, deemed unworthy of the same basic rights as the rest of us; all because they are who they are. I am ashamed for our beautiful state: “Michigan, land of the of the free unless you are sexually interested in your own gender.” How fucking ridiculous.
