Current studies suggest that about 3% of the population is gay or bi-sexual. That leaves 97% of us straighties, right? Well, not actually, it seems that there is another group of people, the asexual folk, who have no interest in having sex, despite having emotional attractions to other people. Isn’t that freakin’ amazing? So, it’s just 96% hetero, 3% homo and 1% non. In terms of the US population, that means about 270 million, 9 million and 3 million.
If there are 3 million asexuals, why haven’t we heard about it before? Well, as the link suggests, it may just be that such people were always thought strange, so the asexuals had sex anyway. Or, here’s a more intriguing thought, what if asexual men joined the clergy, and asexual women just were basically forced to have sex because they had no real rights? Now that’s what I call speculation!
Update (9:29 PM, 10/14/04): I would like to add that I said “straighties” with my tongue so far in my cheek I could tap the outside of my cheek with a pencil and it would make a cool little “Pop!” sound. Seriously, I feel that all sexual orientations are equally valid and should be embraced. We are the way we are because of our genetics and our society, and as seems more and more supported by science, genetics plays a very large role in determing sexual orientation.
On another note, to those who may have actually followed that original link and read it, did you notice it used the phrase “That’s actually the time that I made out with [snogged] someone.” You know it’s a British website when they translate “made out” to “snogged.” How absolutely delighftul!
